Name of Nominee:  David C. McPeak
Public Name:  Pete Remington
City:  Bay City
State:  MI
School or Address of Nominee:  John Glenn High School, Bay City
Describe why the nominee should win:  It is with great pleasure that I nominate Dave McPeak for the prestigious Golden Apple Award.

Dave has been at John Glenn for 7 years. Returning home to his alma mater, Dave would describe his time at John Glenn as some of his most memorable, influential years. He consistently goes above and beyond to try and make that experience happen for ALL of the John Glenn High School students. This occurs regularly in and out of the classroom.

In the classroom, Dave has taken on a multitude of different social studies courses, including courses he has created, such as Current Events. His Current Events course has, for the past 4 years, honored the area American Veterans by hosting them on Veteran's Day. This assembly is very well thought out and passionate. It has included: having veterans come in as a panel to field questions from his students, art work, band performances, poetry readings, video montages and fundraising. The funds that have been raised each year, have been donated to major veteran charities and local VA hospitals. This huge undertaking has made John Glenn and our community a better place. This also allows students an opportunity they normally wouldn't have.

His passion for social studies and cinema met last year when he created yet another course, American History Through Film. In this course, students watch the chronological history of America through various films. He was also able to use his connection to ESPN's, Adnan Virk to have a Skype session about this cinema course, as Mr. Virk also runs a cinema podcast. His students found this opportunity amazing, that they have a teacher that connects with a television/sports personality and that Mr. Virk was willing to share with the class.

Dave is also an assistant varsity football coach and junior varsity golf coach. Dave's positive leadership role has shown both on the field and on the course. In regards to football, he has began a leadership academy for the upper class men, doing this on his own time. As a first year golf coach, he brought in the largest group of JV golfers Glenn has ever seen, which clearly will help that program out. On top of this all this, John Glenn just began doing broadcast play-by-play of some of their home basketball games this winter, and Dave can be seen regularly up in the booth wearing head phones and a smile!

Dave cares tremendously for the District. He is an active participant in many committees, including: morale, technology, marketing and the district vision. He wants the best for the students and staff and is willing to be in integral roles to help both find great success!

Name of Nominee:  Dana Wissner
Public Name:  Mr. Wissner
City:  MIDLAND
State:  MI
School or Address of Nominee:  Floyd Elementary School, Bullock Creek, Midland
Describe why the nominee should win:  Although modest in her accomplishments, Dana is a top notch teacher of students with special needs. Dana has over 25 years experience servicing a very high poverty-laden community, teaching reading, writing and math to students that have measured deficits in these core skills.

Besides being recognized as a local expert in her field, Dana's niche in the lives of these children is in the use of a therapy dog in her classroom. Dana is now on her 3rd dog (Ellie Bean Irene, a Portuguese Water Dog) that is working by her side supporting the children of Floyd. Her use of integrating a therapy animal, that struggling readers read books to (without judgement of struggle), has resulted in miraculous transformations in confidence and skill for her students. Besides being a supportive ear for students to read to, Dana also recognizes the value of emotional support an animal in the classroom brings. She spends countless hours in dog training, researching effective methods of integrating the dog into lesson plans and of course, correcting papers. All of the children of Floyd recognize her as the "dog-teacher" and many other teachers have shared stories of the immense impact she has on all students. There have been many times that Dana has ran into a now adult student, that remembers her and thanks her for her influence and the impact she and her dog(s) made in their young lives.

Dana firmly believes that all children can learn, especially if they can shed behaviors like fear, frustration and other poverty-related inhibitions. Dana would be a wonderful recipient of this Golden Apple recognition, so that the community at-large could not only hear about the great things she does, but to also learn more about the magnificent impact service animals can bring to the learning environment.

Name of Nominee:  Jennifer Bristol
Public Name:  Jenny Roche
City:  Frankenmuth
State:  MI
School or Address of Nominee:  Frankenmuth High School
Describe why the nominee should win:  I am submitting this on behalf of all three of my children's favorite teacher. She has truly opened up all three of my kids eyes into the world of public speaking and confidence. All three of them looked forward to Monday’s in November to show their debate skills. From a cheerleader, to a wrestler, to a football player, i would have never pictured my children loving this club ad much as they do. When my 12th grader heard about this competition she took it upon herself to write the following:
Mrs. Jennifer Bristol (affectionately known as "mom" by her debate students) is a truly one of a kind teacher. She donates her extra time to the FHS debate and Forensics teams every year and so much more. She is not only a teacher to myself and my peers, but more so an inspiration. She inspires us to use our voices to change the world for the better. She inspires but to go out of the social normal and be ourselves. She inspires us to gain confidence and work toward a stronger use of our knowledge. These are just some of the things that my peers in FHS’s debate class wrote about Mrs. B.
“Mrs. Bristol is a well liked and well respected teacher. Both of these things are very important in a well run class. This is shown through her prosperous debaters as well as through the sophisticated dialect of her English 10 students.” -Konner Roche, 10th grade
“Mrs. Bristol not only runs the most practical class at FHS she also struggles through running the most diverse classroom at FHS. With all of the different viewpoints thrown around in debate class Mrs. Bristol is tasked with controlling the rate of acceleration in these debates which is obviously difficult. With this, Mrs. Bristol handles her job with grace and efficiency and makes debate my all time favorite class at FHS.”
-Jon Kelley, 11th grade
“Mrs. Bristol runs the most fun, and educational class at FHS with NO PREP HOUR!”
-Cullen Peterson, 11th grade
“Mrs. Bristol is by far the best teacher at FHS and in this country. She allows us to express our opinions without hesitation in any way we choose. This is an immensely important life skill that she has allowed us, while teaching the art of public speaking. Everyone i know loves Mrs. B! And it is always clear that Mrs. B loves her students”
-Payton Amy, 10th grade
“It is hard to keep a class in control when the subject is literally teaching students how to successfully argue and be confident in those arguments, but Mrs. Bristol manages it while still allowing us to have fun and use our voices.”
-Carter VanHine, 12th grade
“Being a teacher is a super underrated job, and yet Mrs. Bristol comes to school everyday and gives 100% effort into teaching her students and making them feel comfortable in her classroom. She is the most genuinely kind teacher i have ever had.”
-Katy Schuler, 10th grade
As you can see, Mrs. Bristol is a very selfless and inspiring teacher. All of her students came together in hopes that she gets the recognition she deserves.
