Which can often times be a struggle in teaching literature. Not only is she a terrific teacher, she's a wonderful person who is involved in her school and community. She even heads up the Project Hope group at John Glenn which helps any needy families who go to school in our district. It's a huge undertaking for her but she absolutely loves the feeling she gets knowing how many Bangor families she's able to help when they need it most! She absolutely deserves this Golden Apple award!

Some of the kids (okay just mine) are still crying into week 2,3 and yes even into the second month of school. And he still takes time to reassure kids everything is fine and sends me on my way. My daughter had him last year and my twins have him this year. Emma my older child was having difficulties learning and he pushed to get her the help she needed. Now in 1st grade she is reading and catching up to kids in her grade because he pushed for her to get help! Name of Nominee:  Becky Trudgen
Public Name:  Multiple Nominations
School or Address of Nominee:  Merrill Elementary School
Describe why the nominee should win:  Beth Glazier:
Becky goes above and beyond the expectations of the average teacher.

So far, in 2017, Becky completed the same grant, which included spending 2 weeks of the summer learning about the grant, to create an engineering lab at Merrill Elementary for 3rd graders. She has also applied for a grant this year to bring iPads into our lobby area for students who are waiting for the school day to begin or for students who are waiting to be picked up after school. These iPads will have multiplayer educational apps available for students to learn from while they are waiting. This will turn down time into useful learning time where students are engaged.

Becky is a very giving teacher. She does everything in her power to help Merrill Elementary have the best learning environment possible. She is able to make learning fun for all Merrill Elementary students by helping to provide them with technology. She is a true asset to our district.

Mrs. Gwen Glazier:
Becky Trudgen is an extremely proactive 3rd grade teacher. She goes above and beyond expectations to make learning fun for her students. She has been finding ways to supplement her classroom with innovative projects, through different sources, for years. Last year alone, she secured three Donors Choose grants to allow her students to go on a field trip, celebrate Earth Day, and create using 3D pens. She also achieved a grant from the Dow Corning/Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) STEM Community Partnership program to fund a STEM lab for all 4th graders, which included using her summer to attend a week long seminar. Each of the grants that Mrs. Trudgen works for, ensures that students are reaching beyond their expectations. That deeper understanding and risk taking that is fostered through her special projects gives students a chance to truly experience the learning expectations, not just read or be told about them.

This year Becky moved to the 3rd grade level. She again applied for and received a $2,000 grant through Dow/SVSU. She spent 2 weeks this summer attending workshop/seminars, and has designed an engineering lab for our 3rd grade students.

Becky’s creative spirit, and love of teaching is a true asset to Merrill Elementary School. She finds ways to make the dreams she has for her students come true by being persistent in locating funding sources for projects that have meaning. Students have learned, through these special projects, that if they keep trying when they think they can’t do something, persistence will pay off and the satisfaction of figuring out the solution is very rewarding. This is the reason Becky Trudgen is worthy of the Golden Apple Award.

Name of Nominee:  Kevin Dimmitt
Public Name:  Jamee
School or Address of Nominee:  Myers Elementary in Grand Blanc
Describe why the nominee should win:  At Myers Mr. Dimmitt started as my sons first grade teacher. Initially I was a bit nervous for a male teacher because in preschool and kindergarden he had always had women so I wasn't sure how he would respond. To my surprise Mr. Dimmitt was incredible with the kids! Us parents got wind they may be doing a loop program meaning all the kids would have the same teacher for second grade if they wished. Our wish was granted and we couldn't be happier. My son loves coming to school! Mr. Dimmitt has the ability to not only earn the children's respect as a teacher but be someone they enjoy spending time with. He will often come out on extra recess and play kick ball or tag with the class and the kids think that is just awesome! He also takes time to stay after school multiple days a week for a program called AMP. This is where the kids and Mr. Dimmitt along with another teacher, play multiple different activities and exercises. This has become so popular it's first come first serve! He does everything with a smile on his face and a positive attitude. He is doing much more than just teaching math or science, he is being an excellent role model for a group of children that have grown to adore him!

While in East Lansing, Mr. Hart was pooled with the other bus drivers from school districts across the state. Mr. Hart came to the rescue of TWO school districts, repairing their busses while all of our students were at their conference. Mr. Hart was reluctant to tell me about his good deeds as this is what Mr. Hart does, regularly. Once we got home from our conference, Mr. Hart jumped on a bus again and took our volleyball teams to their games in Durand. He definitely was a superhero, and is every single day.
